Benny's new Christmas album....

Image
Benny Andersson Orkester-Tomte Har akt Hem, Mono MMCD029,  Swedish release November  19, 2012.

Benny Andersson's Orkester has released it's first  Christmas album... The album is  called "Tomten Har akt hem (Santa has come home).  . The album is also available as part of BAO in a Box.

There are four new compositions  on the album.
"Vinterhamn" (sung by Helen Sjoholm) was released as the first single from the album .That song has been well received.  "Vinterhamn" and the title track are the two Andersson-Ulvaeus compositions from the album. Benny wrote two new new instrumentals -" Julvals" and "Tomtestomp"  The remaining Benny Andersson instrumental composition  , "Trettondagspolkan",  appears  to be a rerun from the 2004 BAO! album. Some of the remaining songs are from the Swedish  Christmas music repertoire.   At least a couple of Christmas songs have been recorded by other ABBA solo acts.

Track listing follows...

ABBA's 1975 studio album available now in Deluxe version...

Image
The deluxe version of the ABBA album has come out. This third studio album was the album that proved that ABBA were not one hit wonders. Recorded in 1974 and 1975, it was a major jump in quality from their first two albums. It's still a very good listen, and one of my personal favorites.... T

On September 12, 2012, ABBA the site had reported that the April 1975 self-named ABBA studio album will be released as a deluxe album, in November 2012 in  time for Christmas market.   No unreleased stuff, and for this album there was always very little in the way of interesting bonus tracks, so anything of interest was to be found on the DVD in the form of two TV specials (ABBA in Australia and Made in Sweden). The most notable song left off was the full version of Rikki Rock'n'Roller, which was never going to see the light of day anyway.   With the release of the deluxe version of this album, only Ring Ring is left to release in some kind of special version. The version of the  folk …

Susan Boyle records ABBA song on new album.

Susan Boyle-Standing Ovation: the Greatest Songs from The Stage, International CD November 2012.

Susan Boyle is having another go at  the Benny Andersson songbook.  This time it is the  old ABBA warhorse, "The Winner Takes it All". It is part of her new album of stage tunes.  First,  I thought to myself that "Winner..."  isn't a Broadway song-it seems that I had totally put the Mamma Mia thing out of my mind... Susan  has previously recorded "I Know Him So Well" and "You Have To Be There". So now she has recorded at least one song from every full length Bjorn and Benny musical.

Track listing....

1. Somewhere Over The Rainbow 2. The Winner Takes It All 3. Send In The Clowns 4. The Music Of The Night featuring Michael Crawford 5. Bring Him Home 6. Memory 7. As Long As He Needs Me 8. All I Ask Of You featuring Donny Osmond 9. Out Here On My Own 10. You ll Never Walk Alone 11. This Is The Moment featuring Donny Osmond

New Bjorn Ulvaeus lyric...I Can See Myself In You

Image
Tommy Korberg & Danny Saucedo-"I Can See Myself in You" -download single, October 2012
BAO member Tommy Körberg, 63 and Swedish pop singer Danny Saucedo, 25,  have recorded  a one off single together.  It was  released as Swedish market single download in October 2012. I CAN SEE MYSELF IN YOU is composed by Tobias Gustavsson with  lyrics written by Björn Ulvaeus. Gustavsson already had written the melody before 2012  and dragged it out to put together the song. Bjorn added the lyric in the winter 2011-2012.    It is rare for Bjorn to write lyrics for  a melody not written by Benny or himself. The last I remember was one of the songs on a Gemini album, but perhaps there are others.. Bjorn has hinted that he might write more songs with Tobias Gustavsson.
You got to take work where you can get it...

Tommy and Danny performed the song at the opening ceremonies for  the Friends Arena in Solna, Sweden.

Agnetha's new album, ABBA as wax, Abba -the museum

Image
Five  Fall  ABBA news items . Here's just the barest of facts. Perhaps more later about them - if I feel like writing more.

1.ABBA's likenesses have been finally made by the famous wax museum, Madame Tussaud's in London. The figures are based on costumes used in 1975,

2. Agnetha has started recording a new album.  This album will apparently have new material, no mention yet, as to whether she has written anything for album...The album will be produced by Jörgen Elofsson.

3. Finally, the ABBAWorld exhibit is being given a permanent home in the Swedish Music Museum  Apparently, the exhibit will be called ABBA-the Museum ...
4. ABBA's ABBA Gold has been declared the biggest selling CD in Great Britain, with 4 million copies sold.  This sale figure doesn't include copies sold on tape , download, or LP.  Thus if an album sold a lot in one of those formats, those sales would not be included....
5. Bjorn got together with his Hootenanny Singer band mates on November 16…

New Benny Andersson musical- HJÄLP SÖKES announced...

Image
In September 2013, The Facebook page of IcetheSite reported  that Benny Andersson had a new Swedish  musical coming out. It premiered in Stockholm, on February 8, 2013..

Benny and Bjorn's new  musical is called HJÄLP SÖKES , Lars Rudolfsson originated the  story and directed .  Kristina Lugn wrote  the (script) book , Bjorn Ulvaeus wrote  the lyrics . The music is by Benny Andersson. Benny worked on the music close to the deadline. When the project was announced Bjorn was not on board, but came on later to the project to help with the lyric writing, that Kristina Lugn had started on...

HJÄLP SÖKES loosely translates to "Help Wanted" and the musical is about some middle aged farmers  needing help. The help comes in the form of a mother and her daughter. And the mother and daughter are  not Sophie and Donna.   The staging  will include animals including a goat, a dog, and others.
Benny has written a few songs with Kristina Lugn before, and of course, works…

Polar Prizes Awarded in Stockholm

Image
Cellist Yo-Yo Ma and  Paul Simon have  become   the recipients of  the 2012 Polar Music Prize, Sweden’s most prestigious award for musicians. The prizes were  awarded in Stockholm on Tuesday,  Aug. 28. The award was founded by the late Stig Anderson, ABBA's manager, and has been handed out since 1992. It is typically shared by a pop artist and a classical musician. Stig originally wanted  to give  money to provide for a Nobel music prize , but the Nobel people rejected that idea.

To learn more about the prize visit their excellent website Polar Music Prize Previous winners include Pink Floyd, Sir Paul McCartney, BB King,  Bruce Springsteen, Stevie Wonder, Elton John, Ennio Morricone and Bob Dylan, among others. The prize is awarded by  King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden. Often , Frida attends the ceremonies, though the other members of ABBA never have (correct me if I am wrong about that).

Anne Wood-Divine Discontent,  February ? 2012 Australian CD and I tunes release.
This is a new album of mostly ABBA cover songs by Anne Wood, who starred in Australian version of Mamma Mia.    She played Donna in two stints in 2001 and 2010.   Of interest to Bjorn and Benny fans is the first released version of "The Day the Wall Came Tumbling Down", which was originally written to be recorded by Barbara Dickson and supposedly Elaine Paige. The original version was never released. But a unreleased  Dickson live  version  can be h…
